The geological map of the Hokusai quadrangle of Mercury was recently shortlisted for the Journal of Maps ‘Best Map Award 2019’. Making it to the top ten is a great achievement for the author Jack Wright and for the PLANMAP project, as a great example of the mapping quality we are committed to.

Here a brief statement from Jack:

“I was delighted to learn that my geological map of Mercury’s Hokusai quadrangle is one of the Journal of Map’s top ten maps of 2019. This map is an important deliverable for PLANMAP, and in the future it will provide science context and targets for the ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury. This encouraging outcome is recognition of the meticulous geological interpretation and cartographic representation that went into making and curating this map during my PhD and beyond. Therefore, I am very grateful to my supervisors and co-authors on this publication: David Rothery, Matt Balme, and Susan Conway. I am also thankful for help and support from Valentina Galluzzi, who has led the way for researchers mapping the geology of Mercury. I think this result reflects on the quality of all PLANMAP maps, and I hope that this is only the beginning of PLANMAP’s internationally recognised successes.”
